Why did you choose Shimer?
I chose Shimer College for two primary reasons: the Socratic method of teaching, and the exceptionally high-quality degree available to me in a convenient weekend curriculum. As a long-time working adult, I needed a school that would work within my schedule and yet provide me with an outstanding educational experience. Shimer College fit my needs perfectly!
What is your favorite course at Shimer?
It’s almost impossible to choose a favorite course at Shimer, and that’s the beauty of the curriculum. Each course has work that translates into each of the other courses, providing a fully comprehensive knowledge of all the great thinkers of our time (including your own classmates!) and how they all interrelate and combine to form humankind’s current collective knowledge of “modern thought”. A student will find themselves walking out of every class saying, “THAT was my favorite!” What are your favorite texts in the Shimer curriculum? As it would be impossible for me to choose a favorite course, I could not choose a favorite text. They are all important and integral to the overall experience. However, I can say that my favorite text to read at Shimer is the written work of my classmates or co-learners. Their work is unique and fresh, and wholly insightful regarding the topic at hand. It is a unique experience at Shimer to share and read the work of your peers, and to experience the material through their perspectives and backgrounds.
What is your favorite Shimer memory?
All of the conversations that took place after class. Weekend courses are full of great conversation and coverage of the text, but there was always more to explore. I’ll always remember sitting outside after classes and continuing where we left off—Hegel, Plato, Freud, Lerner, etc. The learning never being confined to the classroom, that’s what I’ll always remember. What are your plans after graduation? Continue on to my Doctorate in Sociology, as well as getting published. My education here has consistently enhanced my career, and that will only continue.
What has been the most beneficial aspect of your Shimer education?
I’m a firm believer that the best way to become a better writer is to write. To be a better speaker, you must speak. At Shimer I’ve learned what my true output potential is, as well as what areas of my writing and discourse I could strengthen. Multiple staff members are on hand (whether you have a class with them or not) to provide assistance and advice as well. It’s like having 20 editors at your fingertips!
What advice would you give to prospective students?
If you are a working adult that has always wanted to finish or start your college education, Shimer is the place to be. Shimer College’s weekend program gives you a convenient schedule while providing the highest level of education. You will be in a class that is large enough to have multiple views and engaging conversation, but small enough for your views and conversation to be heard. Shimer provides the perfect symbiosis between professor and student—it is the way learning was meant to be!
