Shimer College Community mourns Sidney L. Port

The Shimer College community mourns the passing of Sidney L. Port, one of the great American philanthropists of our time and one of the most generous benefactors of Shimer College.  Port, who died on Monday, June 11, 2007, here in Chicago, received an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from Shimer in '76.  He donated close to one million dollars to the College over his lifetime, with special generosity recently toward our  fledgling graduate Teaching Fellows Program, and always insisting that his contributions be named for Robert Maynard Hutchins, the originator of Shimer’s Great Books core curriculum. Former Shimer President Don Moon, who was a personal friend of Sid Port, will represent the College at the funeral.
